  4. Hi
Amazing bikes! I've been following, and admiring your blogs for yonks. I've just picked up an xl 500s, and want to create something these lines. where did you get the spokes to go from 23" to 21" on your XR 500?
I am heading to UK for a bike ride to Kazakhstan and back next march, if I end up in Wales and you're thirsty, let me know.
    Cheers

  6. Saw this one on EBay last night and knew it was one of yours! Well done, yet another awesome job! I've now got my doner bike, a CG125 tank and some CRF end cans, few more bits to collect and then I'll finally get to build one of my own ;-) Loved all your builds since the first one, very inspirational and the reason I want to do one!

  7. Hello backtracker ... Congratulations for making these great models!
I would like to ask you to lower the front if you used only the rim 17 "with tires 120/90 and marched forks, six or intervention on something else.
    Thank you.
    Fabry.

    1. Remove the front mounting lugs on the frame and the tank, this should give you enough clearance.

  11. I really love your builds and just bought a 1988 NX650 to start on my own. My question is your rear disc brake. How can I go about retro fitting one on mine? XR wheel and hub?

    1. would'nt bother to be honest the rear drum is powerful enough if working properly and it looks retro cool!

    2. After much work, my drum brake will not work properly, can I just swap a xr600 swingarm with disc and hub on the bike?

  12. Hi!
Glorius job you did there, I solemnly admire your bikes!
I bought a 1990 NX650 recently and I'm now starting to build it up like you did but I'm confronted with one problem: the tank. Where do you get your CG125 tanks from? Can't find anything on the internet :-/ I thought about fitting a CR250 Elsiore tank from DC Plastics on the frame, would you recommend that?

    Cheers,
    Alex

    1. Thanks alex, you can buy brand new tanks from here.....http://www.china-parts.co.uk/acatalog/Fuel_Tank.html

Plastic tanks can't be altered and are a bugger to paint!

  13. Hi backtracker
    congratulations for the bikes!
    are very beautiful!
I would like to ask, the front tire of your first red bike is 120/90-19 or 100/90-19?
catalogs in the continental does not have the 120, as written on the blog.
    thank you very much

I start a nx project and I would like to use the 250 CRF silencer, can you think its ok with 130/80/17 for the rear tyre or its too large?
    Thanks for your answer

  15. Hi Backtracker,

Really like you bikes. Do you sell them?
    What's the price?

  16. hi,
love the looks of your bikes.
one question, what type of headlight and grill do you use?

    ReplyDelete
  17. The grill on this bike was home made, the headlight was from ebay, the other round style lights come from baja designs usa. cheers.

  18. Hi Andrew,
I too have been spurred into action when seeing your bikes - and the fact that you don't have any for sale unfortunately!
So I went ahead and bought a 93 Domi with 30k miles for what seems a very decent price (800GBP). Picking it up in a couple of weeks and will start the transformation. All the clues to building a good bike seem to be disseminated all across your blog, however their are a few things you haven't said much about, rear sets and kick start. Could you say a few words on that?
Also the baja light looks great but it's super expensive. Do you think a LED front light could work? http://www.garageavue.fr/phares-moto/3830-phare-led-skyline.html

  19. Hi, sounds good, wish i could find one!
Rear sets... never had any - only a single seater.
Kick start... only early dominators had them.
Light... looks really good, may be tempted myself.
    Good luck with your build.

    1. Another question has just popped up I'm afraid - and I know you get tons.
Just read in an article that you re-bore (is that the term) your engine. Could you elaborate on that? Would this be something that you can do yourself with very little tech knowledge or does it really need a specialist?
      Cheers!

      Delete
    2. Only rebore if necessary (cylinder lining worn or scored), and must be done by a specialist.

  20. Thanks for your prompt response and comments Andrew.
Btw, by rear set I meant the footpeg assembly where you shift gears, not passenger footpegs! Did you use stock ones or had aftermarket parts?
With regards to the kickstart am I wrong in thinking that it can be retro-fitted?
Glad you like my headlight! I'm on a really tight budget for this one so I couldn't imagine sinking £200 on lighting - albeit a fantastic one.

And I hope you'll be the first to read this, there are some bargain Domis on Gumtree right now (cheaper than Ebay), this is where I found mine although I'll have to drive it back to London some 200miles...oh well.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Stock footpegs are fine and cut vibration, kickstart assembly can be retro-fitted but you will need alot of parts from a kickstart model engine (early dominator or possibly xr600)

  24. Hi Backtracker, I really like the streetracker look. I own a FX650 Vigor. Are the frame differences (between nx & fx) such that most of the mods you make are not appliable to the fx. e.g. the cg125 etc. Thanks, Paul

    ReplyDelete

    1. Just read through the December 2012 instructions. I think the front section will be similar. The rear however on the nx has two tubes, where as the fx has a sinhle central frame member.

Big fan of your work, short question:

Which nx650 yearmodel would be best suitable for a build?

And do you Think its possible for someone with no previous experience?

Really spectacular! I also think its great how gracious youve been with your time and knowledge, responding to everyones questions. Next time your in Portland Oregon lets go for a ride. Cheers!

  39. Hello Backtracker. Great looking bikes! I'm starting on my first little street tracker right now. I'm using an 85 xl600r. I can see that you drop your forks through the yokes a couple of inches, do you lower them in any other way? The old '85 forks are even more basic than the later models. I can't think of an easy to get a flatter profile to the bike other than the drop through the yokes and the wheel tyre combo obviously. Keep up the great work. cheers, Darren

    1. Hi, thanks for the comment.
on the dominator's fork there is a spacer which is removed and combined with pulling the legs through the yokes the drop is achieved. Not sure if yours will be the same. Hope this helps and good luck with your build.

  42. Hi backtracker,

Just wanted to say all the bikes look fantastic, especially the white one with gold wheels. I have been very fortunate in purchasing a 1998 NX 650 with 19k on the clock for 300 pounds!! Tax and MOT till May next year. Will probably use it through the winter as I ride an XJR1300 most of the time. Plan is to Street track it next year and spend the winter getting some bits together such as the elusive cg125 tank. Hope you don't mind but I will probably have quite a few questions when I start as it will be my first and I have limited knowledge and will be working out of my garage at home. Look forward to speaking soon. Kind rgds Ian

  43. Thanks for the kind words, try searching for a Chinese copy of the tank, chituma i think, more of these about.
    good luck with your build.

  44. I'm all over this.
On it like a car bonnet, but I'll definitely be keeping in touch if that's ok?
I'd like one to look like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsAPr2siPn4

  45. Hi Backtracker, I really love your builds. I was wondering whether you made your own bush guard for this build or was able to source it from somewhere.

    Thanks,

  46. Thanks for the kind words, headlight guard was home-made so can't help sorry.
Wasn't too difficult, give it a go.
    Good luck.

  47. maybe the question is already posed and answered, but are front and rear wheel the same diameter? Each 17inch?
And is it possible to re-use a real wheel as a front wheel if you let redo the entire wheel?
    thank you!

  48. Hi. I'm astonished by the quality of your work and I keep checking your website for months. I bought a NX and it will be a challenge since I haven't worked on a bike before.
